pulmonary function tests (pfts)

How are PFTs Conducted?

PFTs are usually performed using specialized equipment and require the patient to follow specific breathing instructions. During a spirometry test, the patient inhales deeply and then exhales forcefully into a mouthpiece connected to a spirometer. For lung volume tests, techniques such as body plethysmography or gas dilution are used. Diffusion capacity tests involve inhaling a trace amount of carbon monoxide and measuring its concentration in exhaled air to assess gas exchange efficiency.
