To generate antibodies for histological use, animals such as mice, rabbits, or goats are immunized with the antigen of interest. The immune system of the animal produces antibodies against this antigen. These antibodies can then be harvested from the animal's blood. For monoclonal antibody production, the B cells producing the desired antibody are fused with myeloma cells to create hybridomas, which can be cultured indefinitely to produce large quantities of the antibody.
