Given the role of mitochondria in energy production, tissues with high metabolic rates are most susceptible. These include:
- Skeletal Muscle: Often shows ragged red fibers and other abnormalities. - Brain: May exhibit spongiform changes, neuronal loss, and gliosis. - Heart: Cardiomyopathy can be seen, and histological examination might reveal abnormal mitochondria within cardiomyocytes. - Liver: Hepatocytes may show fatty changes and mitochondrial proliferation.
