G6PD is ubiquitously present in all cells, but its activity is particularly high in tissues that are involved in active biosynthesis such as the liver, adipose tissue, adrenal cortex, and in rapidly dividing cells like those of the bone marrow. The enzyme is also critical for the survival of red blood cells where it helps to protect against oxidative damage.
