X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP) is a potent member of the inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAP) family. It plays a crucial role in regulating cell death by blocking the activity of caspases, which are essential mediators of apoptosis. XIAP is encoded by the BIRC4 gene located on the X chromosome.
