Parasympathetic nerves originate in the brainstem and the sacral spinal cord, specifically from cranial nerves III, VII, IX, and X, and sacral segments S2 to S4. They have long preganglionic fibers that synapse with ganglia located near or within their target organs. The ganglia contain the cell bodies of postganglionic neurons, which have short fibers extending to the target tissues.
