What is the histological structure of the alveoli?
The alveoli are tiny air sacs where gas exchange occurs. Histologically, each alveolus is lined by a thin squamous epithelium composed of Type I pneumocytes. Interspersed among these are the cuboidal Type II pneumocytes. The alveolar walls contain a rich network of capillaries, and the interstitial space includes elastic and collagen fibers, which provide structural support and elasticity.
