What is the Histological Structure of Cranial Nerve Nuclei?
Histologically, cranial nerve nuclei are characterized by clusters of neuronal cell bodies, or neurons, enveloped by neuroglia. These neurons are typically larger than those in other parts of the CNS and have prominent Nissl bodies, which are aggregations of rough endoplasmic reticulum critical for protein synthesis. The nuclei are often surrounded by fiber tracts that carry sensory and motor information to and from the nuclei.
