A fibrous cap is a layer of connective tissue that covers atherosclerotic plaques. It is formed by the proliferation and migration of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) from the media to the intima of the artery. These cells produce extracellular matrix proteins, including collagen and elastin, which provide structural integrity to the cap.
