A basal body is a specialized organelle found at the base of cilia and flagella in eukaryotic cells. It plays a critical role in the formation and function of these motile structures. Structurally similar to a centriole, the basal body acts as the organizing center for the microtubules that comprise the ciliary or flagellar axoneme.
