There are three main types of restriction enzymes:
Type I: Cleave at sites distant from their recognition sequences. Type II: Cut at specific positions within or close to their recognition sequences. These are the most commonly used in labs. Type III: Cut outside of their recognition sequences but closer than Type I enzymes.
