Shadow plaques are histological features observed in certain demyelinating diseases, most notably in multiple sclerosis (MS). They are areas within the central nervous system (CNS) where myelin has been lost, but some degree of remyelination has occurred. The term "shadow" refers to the faint or less dense appearance of myelin in these regions compared to normal myelinated areas.
