IGF is synthesized in response to growth hormone (GH) stimulation. The liver is the principal source of circulating IGF, but it can also be produced locally in tissues. The synthesis involves the GH binding to its receptor on the hepatocytes, initiating a cascade of intracellular signals that lead to the production of IGF.
