Keratinocytes play a critical role in waterproofing by producing keratin and other proteins that form a tough, protective layer. As keratinocytes migrate from the basal layer to the surface, they undergo a process called keratinization. During this process, they produce increasing amounts of keratin and lipids, eventually forming the waterproof stratum corneum.
