During surgery, tissue samples, or biopsies, are collected to be examined histologically. Surgeons use various techniques to obtain these samples, including needle biopsy, excisional biopsy, and incisional biopsy. The collected tissue is then fixed in a preservative, typically formalin, to maintain its cellular structure before being processed and embedded in paraffin wax for microscopic examination.
